Teens Say They Want a Mustang, But is it Propaganda

Friday February 29, 2008
Ken Gushi Drifting in a Mustang GTYesterday I came across an interesting post on the Kicking Tires Car Blog. It highlighted a recent survey conducted by a research company that specializes in buyer behavior. In the survey teens were asked which car they would most like to own. To weed out exotic dream cars, the teens were told the car would have to be something they could save for, or something their parents would buy them.

According to the post, a majority of teens selected the Ford Mustang. (They also tried this survey out on 20 year olds. The 20-somethings said they'd most like to own a Honda Civic.) The end result was a lot of comments ripping on the Mustang. In fact, one poster claimed the study is pure "propaganda" in an attempt to win over buyers due to the recent Mustang recall.

I don't know about you, but when I was a teen the Mustang was the car to have. Unless of course, you wanted a Camaro. Then again, times have changed. Take drifting for example. Who would have guessed it would become so popular? That's not to say a Mustang can't drift. Just ask Ken Gushi, shown here putting his Mustang GT into a controlled skid during a drifting competition. Are you the parent of a teen who wants a Mustang? Possibly you're a teen who wants, or already owns, a Mustang? If so, speak up and let it be known! I'd like to know if you think the study was propaganda.

Both of my kids have owned Mustangs. When i was a kid I owned a Mustang. Don’t think it’s a stretch to think kids would want one today.

Well, when I was younger I bought a 64 1/2 Mustang, but could never afford to fix it up. So at 62 I have bought a 2008
Mustang and have many add-ons and no end to it in the future. This is as bad as the Harley, so many after market items offered to make it your own. I never want to grow up!

Man ive want a Mustang forever. However thought it was a shame on the new models they don’t look like the old ones and arnt as pretty as the 90’s. Im sixteen and that will probably be the first car I by myself buy.

Congratulations on your 2008 purchase John! And definitely, the aftermarket options are endless. And Shelton, great to hear you’re looking at a Mustang. What’s good is you have 5 generations of the Mustang you can choose from. If you prefer the 90s body style, there are plenty out there for sale.

We have a 2003 Mustang convertible. Folks here have no idea how mythical the Mustang name is around the world. My wife, born’n'raised in Korea, wanted a Mustang since she was a girl. So in ‘03, after four years of saving, we practically skipped to the dealership and got her a brand-spankin-new Mustang droptop. When her college buddies have seen/heard about our car, they drool — most have never seen one in person as they’re rare in ROK (we live in the USA) — but they all know the Ford Mustang. As for us, we now have a child and had to search to find the only infant car seat on the market that fit, but no matter what we will never not have a Mustang in the family. Friends and family predicted we’d sell it when we were expecting. Nope! And heck yeah it’s easier to get the kid into a minivan, but then there’d really be no point in going anywhere.

The convertible Mustang is a dream to drive on the open road. Of the Mustangs I’ve owned, one was a New Edge. The 2003 is a fine example! Definitely hang onto the car. Your kid will thank you years from now when you have the coolest “parent” ride in town!

I have always looked at mustangs as the unattainble dream car. especially in Australia where prices are inflated due to high demand. However now more than ever i am on the lookout for a straight california car for an easy resto….Mustang ownership for me isnt a question of if, but when!!
