More Shelby GT500KR Mustangs to be Produced For 2009

2008 Shelby GT500KRThis year, Ford and Shelby are scheduled to produce 1,000 of the 40th-Anniversary Edition Shelby GT500KR “King of the Road” Mustangs. If you weren't able to get your hands on one, never fear. Yesterday the two companies announced that they will create an additional 746 for the 2009 model year. Of those, 571 will go to U.S. customers. The remaining 175 will go to countries where the car was not offered this year, including Canada. I'm reminded of the many letters I've received from Mustang enthusiasts outside of the United States. They often talk about a need for improved customer relations between Ford and international buyers. Possibly this is a step in the right direction?

The 2009 Shelby GT500KR will feature the same 540-hp 5.4L supercharged V8 engine as the 2008 model. It will also feature the same body with a unique carbon composite hood and unique striping. It will not, however, feature 40th Anniversary badging.

In a release issued by the companies, automotive legend Carroll Shelby said, "The response to this car has been overwhelming, so I’m glad we can share it with more Mustang enthusiasts." He added, "This car is really special to me and demonstrates that when Shelby Automobiles gets together with Ford SVT and Ford Racing, we can deliver a Mustang that will compete with the best in the world."

Speaking of the "King of the Road" Mustang, About.com automotive editor Brooklyn Bob captured these photos of the 2008 Shelby GT500KR Mustang at the New York International Auto Show yesterday. There's no about about it, this car is a looker.
