Sales of the Ford Mustang Down 30.9% in March 2008

Tuesday April 1, 2008
Today Ford Motor Company announced that sales of the iconic Ford Mustang were down 30.9% in March. In March 2007 Ford sold 14,737 Mustangs. In March of 2008 the company sold only 10,180 units. Recent talk of a country in recession does not paint a positive picture for automotive sales in general. Ford Mustang sales were down 28 percent in February when the company sold 7,752 units. In January the company sold 6,545 Mustangs.

Meanwhile Ford Edge retail sales were up 35 percent in March and 52 percent in the first quarter, thanks in part to stronger sales on the coasts. Retail sales for the Ford Focus were the highest for any month since August 2005 – with retail sales up 36 percent in March and 35 percent in the first quarter compared with the same periods a year ago.

“This is a very challenging external environment, reflecting a seismic shift in consumer preferences,” said Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications Jim Farley. “These conditions will likely persist in the near future. At Ford, we remain focused on executing our plan, which includes being profitable at lower volume and changed mix."
