Ford Mustang Sales Down in May by 44.9 Percent
Well folks, Ford has released its sales figures for the month of May, and guess what? Sales continue to decline. According to the report released today, Ford sold 9,633 Mustangs this May, compared to the 17,478 they sold in May of 2007. That’s a decline of 44.9 percent over last year’s numbers. At this time last year Ford had sold 64,560 Mustangs. As of this year, the company has only moved 44,160. In all, Mustang sales are now down 31.6 percent for the year.
I have to admit, I’m not surprised. The Mustang is in need of a face lift, and if what they say is true, it should get one late next year when the 2010 Mustang debuts. Not only that, but economic times are tough. Consumer spending is down, gas prices are through the roof, and everything from food to utilities seems to be on the rise.
According to reports, the 2010 Mustang will “look” smaller, although it will actually be the same size as the current car. Smaller cars appear to be popular at the moment. Another item on the agenda is the twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost powered V6 engine which is predicted to produce more horses than the current GT's 4.6L V8 engine. The company says Ecoboost results in 20 percent better fuel economy and produces 15 percent lower CO2 emissions. As for gas mileage, they say this new optional engine will provide a few additional miles per gallon over the existing V6 engine.
Today in L.A. I paid $4.65 per gallon to fill my Mustang with gas. Seems like prices are rising by the hour. I read a story yesterday about some high schoolers in Kentucky who have parked their cars in exchange for horses. Will this be the “Pony” car of the future? I sure hope not. Do you know what it costs to feed a horse? Oh, and then there’s room and board.
