New ILSAC GF-5 Motor Oil Specification

By October 12, 2010

Last weekend I took a moment to ponder the summer that got away. Hard to believe Fall is here. That said, I'm reminded of something important. It's time to change the oil in my Mustang.

Speaking of motor oil, I found myself talking to the folks at Shell Lubricants a few weeks back. The topic of our discussion was the new ILSAC GF-5 motor oil spec which rolls out this month. ILSAC stands for International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee. GF-5 is the new required motor oil specification for new engines leaving the factory.

Dr. Bob Sutherland of Shell Lubricants explained that the new specification provides increased piston deposit protection, improved sludge protection when compared to GF-4, and reduced emissions.

Reported ILSAC GF-5 Benefits:

  • Increased fuel economy
  • Reduced maintenance
  • Reduced emissions

For the full scoop on this new oil, check out the official website. Be sure to check out the video of Ford's Pete Misangyi while you're there. He discusses the fuel savings using ILSAC GF-5 engine oils.
