To many Lee Iacocca is the Father of the Ford Mustang. No doubt, his work with the car in its early years set the foundation for its success today. On June 22, 2009 it was announced that a special 45th anniversary edition of the Ford Mustang will be dedicated to Iacocca. With a starting price of $89,950, the 2009 Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Mustang will be limited to 45 units and will be sold exclusively through Galpin Ford in North Hills, Calif.

In addition to having his name on the car, Iacocca also helped design this special anniversary-edition Mustang. According to a press release issued by the manufacturer, Iaccoca collaborated with designer Michael Leone and coachbuilder Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters of Fountain Valley, Calif. In all, it reportedly took two years to complete the design.

Sleek and Sharp Exterior

First things first, the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Mustang is only available with a special "Iacocca" silver hue exterior paint job. The car, which is based on the standard 2009 Mustang, also features a distinctive fastback design. It also sports sunken headlights, a slanted grill, and is positioned closer to the road due to its lowered stance. Other exterior features include an Iacocca Design Hood Emblem, Iacocca Design Trunk Cap "I" Emblem, and special Iacocca Design Trunk Lettering.

Refined Interior with Creature Comforts

The inside of the Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Mustang is anything but typical. Upon first glance, you’ll likely notice its leather-wrapped steering wheel complete with the Iacocca badge. It also features Iacocca Aluminum Door Still Plates, Iacocca Diamond Design Leather Seats with Embroidery Stitching, and an Iacocca Signature Dash Plaque complete with its own serial number. Other standard features include air conditioning, one-touch up/down power windows, and a standard rear window defroster.

Mover and a Shaker

While some cars look fast, and are anything but, the Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Mustang is said to pack a punch. According to the company, two engine options are available. You can either go with a 4.6L V-8, complete with Ford Racing’s Cold Air Intake system, which is capable of producing an estimated 320 hp, or you can opt for the more powerful supercharged 4.6L V-8, with its Ford Racing Supercharger, capable of producing an estimated 400 horsepower. Both engines come with a Ford factory warranty.

Other performance features include Ford Racing’s Handling Package, optional 14-inch Ford Racing Brakes, and 20-inch Goodyear Eagle RSA 245 X 45 X R20 tires mounted on chrome wheels with "I" Design center caps. Although some automatics may be produced, the majority of the cars will feature a manual five-speed transmission.

Similar to Iacocca himself, this limited-edition Mustang, while refined and mature, is a mover and a shaker. Although pricing is said to start at $89,950, the number six car was sold at an auction in early August 2009 for an impressive $125,000. The No. 5 Iacocca Mustang was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas on October 9, 2009 for $320,000. According to reports, offers on the remaining cars have been upwards of $100,000 each.

Those interested in purchasing one will need to go through the Galpin Ford Dealership directly. For more photos, videos and/or information about the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Mustang and I Legacy, visit www.ilegacy.com.
