The Road Ahead
In examining 2010, most signs point to an improving market for new car sales. In all, Ford Motor Company sold 73,716 Mustangs over the course of the year. That’s a definite improvement over the 66,623 Mustangs the company sold in 2009. That said, Mustang’s competition played a key role in 2010 as well. In fact, Chevrolet’s Camaro beat out the Mustang for the first time since 1985 in yearly sales. The company moved 81,371 of the cars in 2010.When asked how the Ford felt about the Camaro’s sales figures, Ford sales analyst, George Pipas, told Automotive News, "If that was important, we wouldn't have taken a shift off at Flat Rock." Ford definitely appears to be more concerned about their core, with less focus on overall numbers. The launch of a Chevy Camaro Convertible in 2011 is sure to add fuel to the competitive fire. Dodge also plans to kick things up a notch with a revised Challenger, including the release of the SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition. Only 1,492 will be produced.
"With our balanced line of high-quality, fuel-efficient products, we have a solid foundation to deliver more sales and improved results in 2011," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "Consideration for Ford is increasing beyond our traditional areas of strength - signaling that the seeds of growth already have taken hold."
On January 10, 2011, Ford Motor Company announced it will add 7,000 new hourly and salaried jobs between this year and next in the United States. “Ford is committed to American manufacturing, and we are on a path to add more than 7,000 American workers over the next two years as we continue to grow our product lineup,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Working with our partners, including the UAW, Ford is finding competitive ways to engineer and build even more high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles with technologies American consumers really want.”
All things considered, 2011 appears to be off to a good start. How will Ford deal with increased competition and a marketplace increasingly focused on fuel economy and alternative technology? No doubt, it's sure to be another exciting year for Mustang enthusiasts around the globe.
