Dirty Piston | Pennzoil Ultra Clean Piston
Pennzoil’s newest line of synthetic motor oil, Pennzoil Ultra, recently made its debut during NASCAR’s Shelby American Race in Las Vegas, Nev. The product’s tagline is, “Nothing keeps you closer to factory clean.”
The oil, which utilizes Hyper Cleansing Technology, is designed to improve engine efficiency while working to remove engine gunk and build up. According to a press statement issued by Pennzoil, “The new, ultra-class synthetic product is the output of a global team of scientists pursuing the goal of maintaining an engine in factory-clean condition.” In all, it reportedly took three years to develop this oil.
How It Works
So how exactly does it work? Well, Pennzoil says its Ultra synthetic contains ingredients designed to dissolve common contaminants found in motor oil. We’re talking about deposits that can corrode the engine. Does this mean Ultra Synthetic will transform a gunked up engine into a sparkling clean specimen? When asked this question, Robert Sutherland, Principal Scientist, Pennzoil Passenger Car Engine Lubricants said, “It depends on what kind of shape your engine is in at the moment.” Peter Sant, Global Product Marketing Manager, Shell International Petroleum Company, continued, “If someone has a car with more than 5,000 miles, normally you’d expect to see some traces of varnish deposits on the top half of the dip stick. Within three to four oil changes, you should begin to see those disappear.”When compared to its other brands of oil, Pennzoil said Ultra Synthetic removes 35 percent more engine sludge than Pennzoil Platinum. Pennzoil Global Brand Manager Debbie Van Schalkwyk said, "We developed new Pennzoil Ultra motor oil molecule by molecule to seek out and dissolve contaminants safely into the oil before they form deposits or corrode the engine. We are very proud to be able to state that 'Nothing keeps an engine closer to factory clean than new Pennzoil Ultra.'"
Moving In Stereo
The company's television advertisements, which are backed by The Car’s song, "Moving In Stereo", feature sophisticated robotic arms changing the oil in a garaged Ferrari. According to Pennzoil, Ferrari has named the new Pennzoil Ultra as the only motor oil approved and recommended for use in all Ferrari engines in the United States. I must admit, while appealing, the commercial's music did conjure up memories of Phoebe Cates in her Fast Times at Ridgemont High pool scene. Not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
Pricing and Availability
As for the pricing, Pennzoil said the Ultra Synthetic line will cost more than its Platinum brand, but they didn’t say how much. Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 viscosities can be found in major automotive retailers nationwide. The oil is backed by Pennzoil's Lubrication Limited Warranty for up to 15 years or 500,000 miles.The company says the oil is suitable for fuel-injected gasoline engines fitted with 'blow-by' recirculation and catalytic converters operating in extreme driving conditions.
