Retrobuilt Motors, based out of Lamar, Missouri, is a company known for taking classic Mustang components and infusing them into modern day rides. The About Mustangs team had the opportunity of meeting up with the Retrobuilt team at the recent 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was there that the company had several of its sharp looking “modern day” classics on display.

No doubt, more than a few attendees thought the cars were genuine classics. Some, even after being told otherwise, had a hard time believing they were modern day Mustangs outfitted with classic parts.

In the world of Mustangs, classic steeds are a highly sought after commodity. Unfortunately, they aren’t always within reach for many Mustang enthusiasts. In addition, some enthusiasts would prefer to drive a newer Mustang with all the creature comforts of air conditioning, power steering, anti-lock brakes, the whole nine yards. So how can they get the classic Mustang feel in their new ride?

Enter Retrobuilt. Brian Brewer, of Retrobuilt, says customers interested in one of their modern day classics must first purchase a donor vehicle. Unlike some post-title package programs, the car doesn’t have to be a 2013 or 2014 Ford Mustang. Retrobuilt has converted various fifth generation S197 Mustangs. The late-model car is then converted into a modern-day classic, using parts from classic Mustangs fitted into the existing late-model car.

The company explains, "For a true retro concept, our cars have authentic metal bumpers, door handles, rear window louvers, and original type mirrors and side marker lights. We even handcraft the stainless steel trim on the front end of every car. There are countless custom features that make our car a true 'Retro built' automobile, in high demand in the auto industry today."

In all, the company offers several different classic model packages. This includes a 1969 Mustang GT Fastback package, a 1969 Shelby GT 500CS Convertible build, and a 1969 Shelby GT 500CS Fastback model. The company even offers up a Prototype 1969 Terlingua Mustang Race Car Package. Each vehicle package can be equipped with an optional racing upgrade, which offers supercharged power up to 500 horses. Other features of the racing package include goodies such as Shelby brake covers, Baer Brake upgrade, and a lowered suspension.

Even better, through their partnership with Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc, the company’s GT500CS Mustang is an authorized Shelby American product. It even comes with its own Retrobuilt serial number & Dash Plaque, and Shelby Certificate of Authenticity.

No doubt, we were pretty impressed by the cars Retrobuilt had at this year's show. And to be honest, we weren’t the only ones. Companies such as Classic One CRD out of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Karl Kustom Corvettes in Des Moines, Iowa have been offering up classic Corvette conversions for some time now. It’s great to see Ford’s Mustang joining the show.
