How to Prepare Your Mustang for Summer
Things to Do Before You Hit the Road This Summer

By , About.com Guide

Before you hit the open road for some warm weather cruising, don’t forget to check the condition of your Mustang. Winter can be harsh. Take some time to make sure everything is in working order before the hot summer heat moves into town. When summer arrives, you can have peace of mind knowing your Mustang is in tip top condition for fun in the sun.

Change Your Oil and Check Your Fluids

First things first, check your motor oil. When was the last time it was changed? I make it a habit of always changing my oil after a long winter. It's an added layer of protection that gives me peace of mind. When selecting your new oil, check your owner's manual for recommendations. Your Mustang's engine can really heat up in the summer, so you want to be sure you have a solid layer of protection. You should also check your other fluids such as brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid.

Check Your Air Filter

Is your Mustang breathing properly? If you’ve never taken the time to change your air filter, chances are it's not. Old air filters can hold your Mustang back by reducing horsepower and fuel economy. I recommend you examine your air filter at least two times a year, or every other oil change.

Check Hoses & Belts

While you're under the hood, check your hoses and belts. Are they in good condition, or are they worn or cracked? Check your radiator and heater hoses as well. If they feel soft, you might want to consider replacing them.

Check Radiator & Flush if Needed

Another item to check is your antifreeze/coolant level. Do you have a 50/50 mix of water and coolant? Better make sure before summer arrives. This is especially important if you're driving an older model Mustang. Newer Mustangs fair better in this area, but they're not immune. Also make sure you're using the proper coolant for your Mustang. Check the owner's manual. If it's been a while since you've flushed your radiator, now's a good time.

Examine Aftermarket Add-Ons and Accessories

Many Mustangs feature aftermarket accessories such as cold air intakes, super chargers, sway bars, and other performance add-ons. Take a moment to examine these accessories to make sure everything is in working order. Make sure all nuts and bolts are tight and that nothing has come loose over the winter months. Examine these accessories for signs of wear. If you notice a problem, contact the product's manufacturer.

How's Your Tread?

Next let's look at your tires. If you have winter tires on your Mustang, now's a good time to switch back to your standard set up. Before you make the switch, be sure to give both sets of tires a good inspection. Are they cracked? Are they older than six years? If so, you might want to consider replacing them. Also check your remaining tread. If there's less than 1/8" left, consider investing in new tires. While you're at it, check your spare tire. Is it inflated and in good condition? You never know when you might have to use it. Do you have the proper tools in your car to change a flat? Make sure you do. Most importantly, make sure all your tires are set to the proper pressure.

Check Your Wiper Blades

Let's move on to wiper blades. Replace them if needed. All that grime and gunk from winter might have worn them down. It's a good idea to replace them before summer storms roll in.

Check Your Battery

Has your Mustang been sitting around all winter? Even if you drive it every day, it's a good idea to check your battery before summer arrives. Summer heat can really put your battery to the test. Make sure the posts and terminals are free of any corrosion. Also check your cables to make sure everything is in good working order. If your battery is on the fritz, don't wait to purchase a replacement.

Check Your Lights

Let's face it, if you're driving with one headlight you're a risk to yourself and others. The same can be said for brake lights. Now's a great time to make sure everything is in working order. Turn your headlights on and check to see if both are working properly. Also check your turn signals. Have a friend help you check your brake lights as you put your foot on the pedal. If no one is available to help, back up near a reflective surface. Look through your rear view mirror to see if both brake lights are functioning properly. If they aren't, it's time to replace them.

Check Your Windshield

Seems like every winter in NJ my windshield took a few hits from flying debris. It's no wonder with all the salt on the roadways. Check out your windshield. If you notice any cracks, have them repaired before they creep across your entire windshield in the summer heat.

Wash & Wax Your Mustang

When you've finished giving your Mustang a good inspection, it's time to give it a wash. Road grime from winter driving can wreak havoc on Mustang parts. Pay close attention to the undercarriage. Make sure your Mustang is free of any salt or other harsh contaminants that promote rust and decay. If you plan to keep your paint in good condition, you need to wax your Mustang from time-to-time. After you wash your Mustang, give it a complete waxing. Your Mustang will look sharp and you'll be protecting it from the harsh elements on the road and in the air.

If you encounter a problem with your Mustang, reach out to your local mechanic. Most importantly, make note of any work you performed. It's important that you keep good service records.
