The New Personalized MustangAlthough the 2008 Mustang offers up no significant changes in design, the new lineup does feature several new options.
Ford's goal for 2008 is to provide ‘that personalized look and feel that Mustang enthusiasts love.' One such offering is new interior ambient lighting. This feature offers buyers the option of illuminating the front and rear-foot wells and front-cup holders with any one of seven colors: red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, green and yellow. Ford will also offer HID headlamps in 2008.
As for Mustang packages, Ford will once again offer the popular Pony Package which gives V6 buyers the chance to spruce up their Mustang with GT handling and other GT-appearance accessories. The V6 coupe will also feature new optional 18-inch premium wheels. Meanwhile, Mustang GT (See full review) buyers will have the option of upgrading to the California Special package which features 18-inch wheels, side scoops, tape stripes, rolled bright exhaust tips, and black leather trimmed seats with unique “Cal Special” Dove or Parchment leather inserts. This package also features a larger air intake, a chin spoiler, and unique front and rear fascias. The GT appearance package is also available in 2008 featuring rolled exhaust tips, an engine cover with a Pony emblem, and a hood scoop. Both GT packages can be ordered separately or combined, depending on the buyer's preferences.
In the Shelby arena, Shelby GT owners will get the option of a new Vista Blue exterior color with silver stripe, and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible. A Shelby GT500 will remain in the 2008 lineup, featuring 500 hp powered by a supercharged 5.4L V8 engine. It is available with a standard transmission only. The Shelby GT500KR will feature a carbon composite hood, Shelby-designed 18-inch wheels, and special 40th Anniversary badging with striping. A Shelby GT-H Mustang is available for 2008 in either convertible or coupe styles. Unfortunately, like previous models, it will only be made available to Hertz rental car facilities across the United States.
Wrapping up the lineup is the limited-edition Warriors in Pink Mustang package which will feature a leather-wrapped aluminum spoke steering wheel with Pink contrast stitching, Pink ribbon and Pony fender badge, in addition to Pink 'Mustang' rocker tape stripe. It will also feature charcoal leather seats and Charcoal floor mats with Pink contrast stitching. This Mustang package will be available in either black, white, or silver colors, with the option of coupe or convertible body styles.
PerformanceThe 2008 Mustang will stick to its existing 4.0L V6 and 4.6L V8 engine lineup. The V6 engine is capable of producing up to 210 hp and 240 lb-ft torque, while the V8 engine can output 300 hp and 320 lb-ft torque. The Shelby GT's modified 4.6L V8 engine is capable of generating 319 hp, while the new Shelby GT500KR will produce a jaw-dropping 540-hp, powered by a 5.4L supercharged V8 engine. Talk about a high-powered Mustang. The GT500KR is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. The Shelby GT500 will once again output 500 hp via a 5.4L supercharged V8 engine.
Safety and SecurityFord also plans to improve safety by making side-impact airbags standard equipment on every Mustang built for 2008. In addition, a four-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with traction control is standard on GT models and available on V6 models.
Also available is the anti-theft package which features a sensing module to guard against tow-away thefts and an interior motion sensor to detect smash-and-grab break-ins. The system also features a separate alarm sounder to deter thieves trying to disable the horn.
