On Tuesday January 10, 2012, Shelby American revealed three new special-edition Shelby Mustangs at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The cars, which will be limited to 100 units each, were created to celebrate the company’s 50th year in business.
“Few thought that Shelby American would make it in the car business for 50 years,” said Carroll Shelby. “We built the first Cobra in a rented garage and then GT350’s in an old hanger. But our company is still here, manufacturing the best cars that I’ve ever made. The next 50 years will be even better for Shelby American.”
All of the cars will be sold as post-title packages. This means buyers must first purchase the base vehicle before buying into the special-edition Shelby package.
The three packages consist of:
- 50th Anniversary Shelby GT350
- 50th Anniversary Shelby GT500 Super Snake
- 50th Anniversary Shelby GTS
Limited Production Run
Other special features of these anniversary cars include special 50th anniversary badging, custom designed interiors, performance 6-piston front brakes, a limited-edition car cover, and special custom wheels. If that isn’t enough, Shelby says each vehicle will come with a special museum delivery ceremony at the Shelby factory in Las Vegas, Nevada. Buyers will also receive other exclusive collector merchandise.
“Our golden anniversary is a remarkable milestone worthy of this limited edition line of Shelby vehicles,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “On the heels of the unprecedented sellout of our 50th Anniversary Edition Cobra 289, we expect demand for these new Shelby’s to be strong.”
50th Anniversary Shelby GT350
There’s no doubt about it. The 50th Anniversary Shelby GT350 is a looker. Upon first glance, it looks like a modern day version of the classic 1966 Shelby GT350-H Hertz racer; especially when sporting a black exterior with gold stripes.
Some special features of this limited production run GT350 include custom stitched Shelby/Katzkin limited edition interior upgrade with gold stitching, 50th anniversary logos on the seat backs, and a leather shifter. Other interior features include a special-edition emergency brake boot and perforated seat inserts.
The car is also equipped with Shelby/Wilwood limited-edition finish 6-piston front gloss black calipers with gold lettering and a matching finish 4-piston rear brake upgrade. Black models ride on custom 19-inch Shelby/Cragar wheels with a black matte finish, while performance white cars get the same rims in a standard silver finish.
The base package Shelby GT350 comes with a black Shelby/Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger that produces an estimated 525 horsepower. Those looking for something more can opt for the optional Shelby/Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger that produces an estimated 624 horsepower. The optional supercharger is available in either a black or polished finish.
The package has a starting price of $59,995, which does not include the price of the base 2012 GT Mustang required to complete the build.
50th Anniversary Shelby GT500 Super Snake
When it comes to performance and power, Shelby’s base GT500 is one monster of a machine. Kick things up a notch and you get the Shelby GT500 Super Snake. This 750 horsepower beast is a rocket ship on wheels.
The special anniversary edition Super Snake is available in either coupe or convertible versions. As with the other anniversary models, buyers can select between a black or performance white exterior, each with gold stripes.
Special features of this package include custom stitched Shelby/Katzkin limited edition interior upgrade with gold stitching, 50th anniversary logos on the seat backs, and a leather shifter. As with the GT350, the Super Snake also comes with a special-edition emergency brake boot and perforated seat inserts. It also features the same 6-piston front gloss black calipers with gold lettering as found on the GT350.
Other features include a black Shelby/Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger capable of producing an impressive 750 horsepower. The car also features a 3:73:1 differential, a Borla cat-back exhaust system, Shelby Caster Camber adjustment kit, and a front and rear brake duct kit.
The Super Snake Package starts at $59,995, not including the base GT500 Mustang required to complete the package.
50th Anniversary Shelby GTS
Last, but definitely not least, we have the 50th Anniversary Shelby GTS package. A unique feature of this package is it’s available for either V6 or V8 Mustangs. It’s also the most affordable of the special edition Mustangs being offered, with a starting price of $19,995 for the V6 package and $24,995 for the V8 option.
As with the other packages, the GTS comes with custom stitched Shelby/Katzkin limited edition interior upgrade with gold stitching, 50th anniversary logos on the seat backs, and a leather shifter. This includes a special-edition emergency brake boot and perforated seat inserts (manual transmission models only).
The GTS rides on 18-inch Shelby/SR Wheels, with a black matte finish on black models and a chrome finish on performance white models. It also features a Goodyear Performance tire upgrade.
Most notable is the car’s optional 525 horsepower Shelby/Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger for the V8 model. The V6 gets an optional polished Shelby/Procharger Supercharger capable of producing an estimated 475 horsepower. Not bad. Those V8 owners really looking to boost performance can opt for the optional Shelby/Ford Racing/Whipple Supercharger that produces an estimated 624 horsepower.
“From the 800 horsepower Shelby Super Snake to the agile GT350 and nimble GTS, each 50th anniversary Shelby is built to run,” noted Luft. “A 50-year anniversary only comes around once in life. These limited edition Shelbys will mark that milestone for a select few who have a chance to own a piece of history.”
