Modifications and Features

The car is stock, except for BBK headers and full sub frame connectors. Stock mufflers, heavy duty clutch, even the AC works. Car is a 5-speed car, has all the gadgets inside, radar, lights and sirens, radios. It is fully restored to close to original in service condition. Car is equipped with a Setina roll bar, or sergeants bar, as referred to by the patrol. Federal signal motorized deck lights (meaning that they have covers that electrically flip up when activated). KR-11 radar system, and even has a rear window louver similar to the ones installed by WSP fleet when the car was in service from 1990 until 1994.

What makes it special?

Long story short, 1990 was the last year the Washington State Patrol purchased SSP Mustangs, known as special service package mustangs. These are special equipped cars from ford to meet the demands of law enforcement from 1983 until 1993 when the last SSP cars were produced. Washington state only purchased 12 mustangs in 1990. Out of the 12 only two were painted blue and put into service as unmarked vehicles. My car is the only survivor of the two blue cars. The sister car was totalled out in an accident. This car was used in the Kelso Longview area during its tenure with the WSP. Was retired and auctioned in 1994. It has been a true labor of love and I have gotten tons of support from some great troopers including the original driver of the car. The trooper was key to the completion of the car to be like it was in the early 90s.

Advice

  • If you are going to buy and restore a retired police vehicle, make sure you first get the car you want to keep, then make sure that you do your homework. IE check the local laws etc regarding markings and lights, etc., for the vehicle. And don't do stupid things with the car. That's what is hurting our hobby these days. Believe it or not, there are a lot of guys that love old police cars and want to keep them alive and well.

Jonathan Lamas, Mustangs Guide, says:

The Special Service Package (SSP) Fox-Body Mustang, which was produced from 1982 to 1993, is a favorite of mine. During their 11 years of service, Special Service Mustangs were purchased by organizations such as the United States Air force, DEA, FBI, GSA, as well as local law enforcement in three dozen states including California, Texas, Georgia, Oregon, and Florida.
