What makes it special?
I've always been a fan of the 1968 GT390 featured in the movie "Bullitt." I'm also a fan of Steve McQueen. When the first Bullitt Mustang came out in 2001, I was in awe. Unfortunately I couldn't find one at the time, so I purchased a 2001 GT instead.
In 2008 I was asked if I'd like to review the 2009 model. I immediately jumped on the opportunity and scheduled a drive.
A few weeks later I found myself talking to my father on the phone while on a writing assignment in Palm Springs, Calif. We spoke about life, we spoke about my trip, and we spoke about that Bullitt Mustang I was set to test in one week. Dad was a big fan of McQueen as well. He wanted me to send him some pictures when I finally tested the car.
Unfortunately, that would be one of the last conversations my father and I would ever have. The night before the test car arrived, my father passed away. He had been diagnosed with cancer two years prior and was in the last days of his fight.
When Ford dropped off the vehicle, I thought about Dad. That afternoon I went for the longest cruise of my life, up Pacific Coast Highway and back, just the Bullitt Mustang and my thoughts. It was one of the most memorable rides I've ever taken.
Several months later I purchased my own 2008 Bullitt Mustang. Every time I start her up, I imagine my father is there next to me, asking me where we're going to cruise today.
I've owned many Mustangs over the years, but my Bullitt holds a special place in my "Mustang enthusiast" heart.
- Special Ride: The Bullitt Mustang is a special car. It's not flashy like some rides, but it has heart. Step on the gas and you'll see what I'm talking about.
