Mustang and Challenger are NASCAR Bound

Tuesday June 16, 2009
2008 Bullitt at NASCARRumor has it the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger will race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series next year. That's right, Mustangs in NASCAR. First things first, it's about time! Come on guys, we've got Toyota's out there but no Mustang? According to reports, NASCAR wants to mix things up a bit. The introduction of two popular pony cars is sure to generate some buzz. Lee Spencer, over at Fox Sports, says Ford and Chrysler must submit their designs to NASCAR for approval by June 26. They're also saying a NASCAR Mustang would be closer to stock than the current vehicles out there on the track. What that means is you should be able to tell it's a Mustang when you see it drive by. Let's face it, aside from all those flashy decals, most NASCAR racers lack originality when it comes to design. Imagine this: a Ford Mustang NASCAR racer, complete with a huge galloping pony graphic on the hood, roars past a Dodge Challenger to take the big win at Talladega. Get a load of that Cole Trickle! Nothing but smoke and burning rubber. As for the Chevy Camaro, word is it won't be joining the NASCAR party next year.

PLEASE! PLEEAASSEE!

haha, i LOVE the idea, more than love it! Just reading this tiny excert gt my adrenaline pumping, im not even exaggerating, if this goes through and the nationwide series starts running race versions of the Challenger and Mustang (and hopefully Camaro because lets face it, we all wanna see the big 3 in the biggest showdown ever) in this case, I myself would be inspired to want to start a career in Nascar and promote these cars myself.

Great job with the story, keep us updated!

Thanks Evan, I’m a big fan of this myself. Let’s see where everything nets out. Challenger, Mustang, and Camaro in NASCAR is a dream come true and makes for one heck of a race!

(3) NE of AZ says:

Mustangs in NASCAR? NEVER. Look at the rule book, cars are to be American made mid size family cars, which none of the three cars are. This is reason we have(had) Trans-AM. Lets get back to basics in racing. If you want to race pony cars than rewrite the rules to bring them in but lets hope they don’t.

about time, as for NE of AZ the only car i know of made in the usa is the toyota camry made in ky.
even when the monte carlo was running it was made in canada, as far as rules go at what point could u buy a 2 door v8 rear wheel drive TAURUS,why do all the cars have a ford 9″ rear end no matter what badge is on the hood, as RCR said when canging to toyota its the same chassis, gear box, rear end and body with a diffent motor front and rear clip so much for STOCK cars.
i think its great i love it i just think if it wins on sunday u should be able to buy it monday at the dealer, but that wont happen

For all those who agree with this, you need to be smacked.   Jonathan obviously knows nothing about Nascar… ”First things first, it’s about time! Come on guys, we’ve got Toyota’s out there but no Mustang?”….  Even though I agree that Toyota shouldn’t be in Nascar, they’re racing the  Camry, which is also a mid-size sedan. It’s not like they’re driving the Supra.

And as far as Chevy goes, they don’t need to change a thing…    General Motors won 16 of the Past 20 Championships. And the Top 4 cars in the Chase right now are… (wait what’s  that car with the Bow Tie on the Front of it???)

Because we all know the Toyota Camry conveys an image of power and performance. Come on Ryan, NASCAR needs cars like the Mustang more than ever. Ratings have been on the decline for some time now. “Wow, check out that sharp looking ‘Camry’ or, wow, check out that sharp looking ‘Mustang.’ I’ll put my money on the Mustang any day. It’s about time Chevy had some worthy competition out there. In reality, all this could matter a lot more if NASCAR were to return to their “TRUE” stock roots. Of course that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

NASCAR is dying. Bringing back cars folks can identify with will help revive NASCAR. Now all cars look the same with just a different decal on the nose. They need to look like the did when Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Chevy, Ford, Plymouth, Mercury etc. instead of these IROC cars they are now running. They also need to bring back Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett, Jimmy Spencer, Rusty Wallace, and even Dick Trickle might have a few years left in him. Shut down some of the tracks out west, schedule Kentucky Speedway, and about 4 races at Bristol. Put Kyle Busch through a year of Jimmy Spencer’s Charm School and see if NASCAR doesn’t come back to life. And do away with the C. O. T.

I agree with Ronnie B. bring back the days when the cars looked “stock”. Know one can give me an answer why, cars that are sold only as 4 drs. can race as 2drs in NASCAR?! Sorry to say I also believe NASCAR is dying. I have drifted more to INDY & NHRA as a fan. NASCAR at times almost seems “fixed”.? Bring back IROC, switching between Mustang, Challenger & Camero. PS – I own a 2007 Mustang Shelby GT.
