In 2008 Ford offered several special-edition Ford Mustangs in its model-year lineup. Each of these Mustangs could be purchased through Ford Motor Company dealerships, with the 2008 Ford FR500S Mustang being offered exclusively through Ford Racing dealers.

In the 2008 model year lineup Ford offered the next generation of Bullitt Mustang. In all, the new Bullitt Mustang was more powerful than the model released in 2001. Its exhaust note was engineered to mimic the exhaust in the 1968 Mustang GT-390 driven by Steve McQueen in the movie "Bullitt", and it posts a top speed of 151 mph.

This limited-edition Mustang is available as an upgrade package over the standard V6 coupe and convertible. All Warriors in Pink Mustangs feature a pink ribbon and Pony fender badge with pink Mustang rocker tape striping to match. Exterior color offerings for the Warriors in Pink Mustang package include black, metallic silver, and performance white. Proceeds from the sale of each vehicle go to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

A tribute to the 1968 California Special, this package includes Dark Charcoal leather-trimmed seats with Dove or Parchment insert, unique front and rear fascias, side scoops, 18" polished-aluminum wheels, bright rolled exhaust tips, carpeted floor mats with bright badging, and mid-body GT/CS tape stripes in White or Black (package available on GT Premium in Vista Blue Metallic, Performance White, Dark Candy Apple Red Metallic, Vapor Silver Metallic or Black exterior colors only.

First introduced in 2007 as a retail alternative to the popular Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H rental racer, the Shelby GT starts its life in Flat Rock, Michigan as a specially equipped Mustang GT. It is then sent from the Ford factory to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas, Nevada where it is customized. New signature Vista Blue exterior with Shelby GT Silver stripes were offered in 2008 along with a convertible version of the car.

Inspired by the Shelby big-block Mustang of the 1960s, the GT500, which is a joint collaboration between Mustang customizer Shelby and Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT), truly is a performance-powered Mustang. It comes with a MacPherson strut independent front suspension with Reverse-L lower control arms, backed by spring rates and an upgraded stabilizer for improved handling and stopping performance.

The King of the Road returned in 2008. The new GT500KR sports 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack. Total output is 540 hp with 510 lb.-ft. of torque, making it more powerful than the 500 hp Shelby GT500. It's being touted as the most powerful production Mustang ever.

For the first time in history, Ford Motor Company built the race cars at their own vehicle production facility. The car, which made its debut at the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev., was offered up for sale to consumers through Ford Racing dealers, with an approximate price of $75,000. The car competed in the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup.
